The need for an all terrain park
|
|
Significant population growth in Tauranga City and the Western Bay of Plenty District has seen increasing demand for recreational land.
The Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Tauranga City Council, through their joint sub-regional parks policy, recognised that apart from coastal reserves of Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and Bowentown Domain at Waihi Beach, there were few areas in the sub-region filling the gap between small local parks and Department of Conservation estate.
Securing the 1600 hectares of land for the TECT All Terrain Park goes a long way to filling this gap as it provides a significant amount of open space for outdoor recreation in close proximity to major urban areas, not just within the Western Bay of Plenty but the Bay of Plenty region. In this context the park is strategically located 29kms from Tauranga, 27kms from Rotorua and 30kms from Te Puke.
When opened, toward the end of 2008, the TECT All Terrain Park will join a network of sub-regional parks that currently includes the Papamoa Hills Heritage Park and the Huharua Harbour Park at Plummers Point.
