Short Walks in the Western Bay of Plenty

Omanawa Falls

Walking Time:  30 minutes return

These falls are located 11 km up Omanawa Road, which is off SH29. The start of the walking track is signposted on the left, and follows an old access track to the power station.

The Omanawa Falls power project construction began in 1914 and was completed in 1916. A larger generator was installed and the new power station was finally commissioned in 1920.

The track leads down to the edge of the rugged Hidden Gorge Scenic Reserve, then sidles a ledge carved into the rocky cliffs (handrails provided). This area is spectacular, with the Falls cascading into a large pool on the Omanawa River far below. The track ends abruptly at a locked steel door that blocks access to the power station.
