Tuahu Kauri
| Walking Time: |
20 minutes one way |
This walk, located within the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park, begins at the end of Hot Springs Road, just south of Katikati.
The Tuahu is an old Maori route that was also used as a bridle track in the 1890s. From the carpark the well-benched and graded track winds through attractive native forest featuring some lovely young kauri ‘rickers’ and juvenile rimu trees. After 20 minutes a side track leads to a platform surrounding one of the largest kauri trees remaining in the Bay of Plenty. Past this the main track becomes more difficult, narrows and continues up to the crest of the Kaimai Range, so return by the same route.
